La Pizza – Restaurant Review

Overview of La Pizza
I can officially say this is my favorite pizza place in St. Louis! Serving New York-style pizza by the pie and by the slice, this no-frills pizza joint is locally owned by Paulie Bischop, who is originally from Queens, NY. Paulie and his family have operated this small but mighty pizza joint since 2003, along with some loyal employees that also hail from The Empire State. Paulie & his crew wake up early, at 5am, to make the dough & sauce fresh each morning. They also hand select the freshest toppings to ensure the highest quality pizza for their customers. La Pizza also serves salads, hero sandwiches, stromboli, calzones, and more.
The Space
This small, no-frills, pizza spot smells delicious from the moment you walk in. With the pizza oven center stage, and a handful of tables available for dine-in, take a seat or feel free to grab your pizza and go – they do a significant take-out business. The family operated restaurant is decorated with St louis, family & sports memorabilia.
Who/What/When
Come by yourself for a quick lunch slice, bring the whole crew or take it to-go, La Pizza is perfect for any occasion. They are only open 5 days a week, Tuesday – Saturday from 11-8pm, and if they sell out, they may close early.

Fun Facts About La Pizza
- La Pizza is Italian for “the pizza”, not to be pronounced L.A. pizza.
- Against popular belief, Paulie says that water is NOT the secret to great NY style pizza. Legend has it, the recipe for his dough is the real secret…
- Paulie is also not a big fan of provel (duh) and only had it few times, despite living in STL since 1999.
- Voted #1 Pizza in St Louis by St Louis Magazine in 2010!
- The Roberto pizza – aka the supreme pizza was named after Paulie’s baseball idol – Roberto Clemente, a baseball legend who died in a plane crash while delivering earthquake relief supplies.
What To Eat
- 18” Hand Tossed Pizza – The crust is fluffy, yet thin & soft & the sauce is sweet. The cheese is whole-milk mozzarella only! My husband, a New Yorker, says the real test for a good pizza is to eat it plain without any toppings! In New York, they call it a “plain pie” but St Louis, its commonly referred to as “cheese”. A plain pie is always delicious and agreeble way to get my entire family to devour it. But get whatever toppings you desire – they have them all!
- Garden Salad – mix of iceberg and green leaf lettuce, tomato, shredded mozzarella and dressed with the house Italian
Pro Tip
The hours are sometimes unpredictable, they will close early if they sell out of pizza. It’s a good idea to call before you go to make sure they are open!
Final Thoughts
I lived in NYC for 13 years and while St. Louis Style pizza will always have a place in my heart, my husband and I have been searching for pizza that tastes like we are back in NY. This place will not disappoint!
