Overview

A St. Louis institution, located on historic Route 66, offering classic American drive-in food. I’ve been to this place MANY times growing up – my parents use to go on dates here 😊.  In addition to winning a number of awards over the years from RFT, Sauce, Feast and others, Carl’s serves up a lot of nostalgia for St Louisans.  The food is fast, hot & delicious. They are best known for their crispy griddled burgers, French fries, and their homemade root beer, which is served in a frosty mug… pure heaven!

The Space

Carl’s tiny interior offers 16 counter seats centered on the grill.  The décor takes you back in time with nostalgia from Route 66 and STL in the 1960’s and 70’s.  Park & enter from either of two doors, one on each side of the grill.

Who/What/When

This is a great spot for a casual & quick lunch or dinner with family or friends.  There are only 16 seats at the counter, so you may have to wait outside for a seat to open before being seated.  They offer carry out and curbside as well. My most recent visit was for an early lunch around 11:30 on a cold, snowy day.  The place was pretty empty in those conditions but if you come on a summer evening, be prepared to wait!

Fun Facts

Originally opened in 1959, Carl’s Drive In has been flipping burgers for over 60 years!

Try the Tamale with Chili – you won’t be disappointed!

What To Eat

  • Tamale with Chili & Cheese – I know that hamburgers are the draw here, but whenever I come I have to eat a Tamale with Chili.  I love the blend of flavors between the sweet corn cake, the flavorful meat and the salty rich chili on top.
  • Footlong Hot Dog & French Fries – My son, Benji, was in heaven with his extra long hot dogs & fries. He polished off every morsel.
  • Root Beer Float – We shared this delicious treat that’s served in a frosty mug.  What’s not to love about ice cream on top of root beer – sweet, cold, and satisfying on so many levels!

Pro Tip

They are Cash Only!  I didn’t remember that, but thankfully they have an on-site ATM

Final Thoughts

Anytime I’m in Rock Hill around meal time, I’m likely to stop by this legendary spot!
